Spare Parts

Spare parts are rarely considered in the purchase cost of a boat, but if you are intending on really sailing over the horizon you will invest many thousands of dollars in spares before you leave, or worse you will be stuck in some tiny island waiting weeks for EXPENSIVE parts to be shipped to you and clear customs.  Just figuring out what size fuses you need to carry for EVERY electric item on board is a daunting task.   Knowing the necessary parts and sourcing them can take months out of your cruising time.  Ventana is already equipped with a massive store of spare parts.

Also ask us about computer software for worldwide charts, world wide tide tables, weatherfax and email.

* Indicates Ventana's list of optional items that are not included in the asking price.   The  new value of these items is over $ 15,000 and they can be negotiated at the time of sale depending on the needs of the buyer.

The above list are nearly all additions and modifications not found on a standard Island Packet.  Ventana also has the standard Island Packet 40 accoutrements such as 3 burner stove and oven, 7 opening hatches, 13 opening ports, two heads, cedar lined hanging lockers, etc.

Recent Refit
We bought Ventana new and have been her only owners.  She was outfitted from the beginning to the highest possible standards to be a world cruiser and live aboard boat.  She has carried us safely over 50,000 miles including a world circumnavigation.  We are not ready to go around again but she certainly is.

We crossed the Atlantic in early 2012 and returned to the US from the Caribbean in June of 2012.  Because we trust our lives to her on every passage we have always made her the best she can be- no shortcuts.   When things break they are fixed to like new standards so refitting is a constant process and some of the recent improvements include:

Both head pumps were replaced in 2012, the Spectra Watermaker was rebuilt by the factory in 2011.  The SGC SSB radio was factory rebuilt in 2010.  All the standing rigging was inspected prior to her Atlantic Crossing in December 2011 and the life raft re-certified.  The engine oil and filters have been changed every 150 hours.  The fuel injectors were inspected in 2011 and two of them replaced.  The Xintex propane sniffer was replaced in 2011.  A new Autostream feathering prop was installed in 2011.

In December of 2012 Ventana's interior was entirely re-varnished by Island Packet's lead varnisher.  Her exterior woodwork was taken to bare wood and refinished, the cushions cleaned and the hull and decks were compounded and polished.  The two main hatches were replaced with Lewmar factory seals and new lenses.  Engine oil changed and mechanical systems attended to.  She is ready to continue her voyaging.

We look forward to finding new owners for Ventana who will care for her and will experience their own adventures and explorations with her.

She is currently located in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Ideally we would like to find a new owner for Ventana who intends to enjoy blue water sailing as we have.  We would be happy to include in the purchase price 2-3 days of sailing with the new owners for familiarization of all systems and to pass on whatever we have learned in our years of cruising.

Ventana means window in Spanish.  If you are looking for a window through which  to see the world Ventana is ready to fulfill your dreams.

The remainder of this website explains in detail how and why Ventana is outfitted as she is and is full of stories and photos from our 17 year circumnavigation.  There are also lists of the factory specifications that are all universal for all Island Packet 40's.

One caveat- the other pages of this website about outfitting were mostly written in 2001.   In some instances equipment on board will have changed or been upgraded.  The list on this page is most current.

Ventana was built in 1995 by Island Packet and was given special care in her
construction as she was featured in a videotape entitled:  "Outfitting
 the Ideal Cruising Sailboat"

The video also promoted what were then the best products on the market
in every product category from North Sails to Harken furlers to Edson’s bulletproof steering system.  In all, over 50 manufacturers participated in the outfitting of Ventana  and the videotape promotion that accompanied her commissioning.

This hour long program is available for download and normally sells for $19.99 but those interested in purchasing Ventana can contact us for a coupon for a free download.  For information contact robdubin100@gmail.com

Prior to purchasing Ventana we spent 6 years producing two TV series on sailing as well as over 25 video tape programs for Sailing Quarterly Video Magazine.   When we purchased our Island Packet the company was pleased that we had selected their boat from the hundreds of boats we had sailed on and tested professionally.   They ran this ad for several months in all the sailing publications.
